Treating the Neck: A Guide for New Graduates (January 22-23)

As a relatively new physiotherapist, the neck can be an intimidating area to treat, and can indeed be complicated at times. The purpose of this 2 day course is to improve confidence when assessing and treating patients with neck issues.
After performing a cervical scan and ROM testing, many new therapists are often unsure of when and how to assess the biomechanics of the neck, and how to combine assessment findings with manual therapy and useful exercise interventions to maximize treatment outcomes.
This course will provide ample hands on opportunities to learn and get feedback on assessment, handling and treatment of neck biomechanical issues and myofascial treatment techniques. Assessment and treatment techniques will be taught to the Canadian Orthopaedic Division and IFOMPT standards.
Case studies and clinical scenarios will be used throughout the course to highlight and emphasize important and clinically relevant findings.

Course Outline

Day 1:
  • Review C-SP scan - discuss and optimize, interpret results that are a bit more grey
  • C-SP Assessment: what do we do after a scan??
  • Safety Considerations
  • Review ROM findings - start to hypothesize on potential contributing factors
  • Assess PIVMs, PAIVMs (IMP and SAL glides of mid-C-SP, CV region (OA and AA joint) biomechanics and assessment
  • Interpretation of findings
Day 2:
  • Review Day 1
  • Treatment - review grades, locking techniques
  • Discussion of most common myofascial restrictions and contributors to C-SP dysfunction
  • Pain referral patterns from these muscles
  • Trigger point release techniques for these muscles
  • Exercises for C-SP
Case studies/clinical scenarios will be used throughout the course to highlight/emphasize what may be more clinically relevant
