Concussion

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body.

  • 30% of concussions occur at training
  • Fewer than 10% of sport related concussions involve a loss of consciousness like blacking out, seeing stars
  • 47% of athletes do not report feeling any symptoms after a concussive blow

Concussion symptoms may include but are not limited to, loss of consciousness, headache, pressure in the head, neck pain, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, or balance problems, among others.

BASELINE TESTING

Testing brain function before concussion gives us measures to determine if you have a concussion and plan a safe return to sport. These tests can offer healthcare practitioners with an objective benchmark on which to compare should a patient sustain a concussion.

Concussion Treatment

Our protocol program is designed to safely progress athletes and active people from a concussion back to sport or activity.
  • "I would definitely recommend anyone who has a concussion or suspects they have a concussion to go to Sherwood Park Sports Physiotherapy for assessment and treatment.  Lisa provided us with the pertinent information and resources to better understand concussions and all the necessary stages that must be met before returning to regular activity.  She was very informative, thorough and supportive throughout the whole process.  She was always really patient to answer any questions that we had and was very diligent in making sure that treatment was not rushed, and that every detail in that particular stage was met before we moved forward.  I felt very confident that my daughter was fully healed at the end of her treatment.  Lisa was always very friendly and you can see that she truly cares about her patients and their well-being."
